Fare scope: Alberta does not publish one province-wide taxi tariff. This calculator supports the current City of Calgary maximum regulated taxi meter rate and City of Edmonton taxi and accessible-taxi rates. Calgary app-booked prices, rideshare prices and other Alberta municipalities are excluded because their pricing can differ. Eligible YYC taxi airport access fees are detected from the selected route and include GST. For a taxi trip to Edmonton International Airport, the charged fare must be the lower of the meter fare or the applicable official airport-zone flat rate; this calculator shows the meter estimate because a typed address cannot reliably identify the official zone. How to Use the Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta

The Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta helps you estimate a metered taxi trip in Calgary or Edmonton before you travel. Select the correct city, enter a pickup point and destination, choose the fare basis shown in the calculator, and add any stopped or waiting time you expect. The result is displayed in Canadian dollars as an estimated range, not a guaranteed price.

To calculate a fare:

  1. Choose Calgary or Edmonton.
  2. Enter and select a local pickup address.
  3. Enter and select your destination.
  4. Choose the available fare basis. Calgary uses the regulated street-hail or traditional phone-dispatch rate. Edmonton offers street-hail and eligible pre-arranged taxi options.
  5. Add expected stopped or waiting time, or leave it at zero.
  6. Select Get Fare Estimate.

The Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta then uses the estimated road distance, the selected municipal rate and the waiting-time input to produce a fare range. Always confirm the rate with the taxi company or driver before starting the trip.

Alberta Taxi Fares Are Set by Municipality

Alberta does not have one taxi tariff that applies to every city and town. Local rules and operator pricing can differ. This calculator currently supports the municipal taxi fare structures used in Calgary and Edmonton only. It does not estimate fares for Red Deer, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, Medicine Hat, Banff, Jasper or other Alberta locations.

The calculator is designed for licensed taxis covered by the selected city rules. It is not a rideshare price checker and does not calculate limousine, private transportation provider or every app-booked fare.

1. Enter the pickup location

The City of Calgary publishes a maximum regulated taxi meter rate for street hails and traditional phone-dispatch trips. A taxi company may charge less than this maximum. A trip booked through a City-approved app can use a different commercial rate, so the app price may not match a regulated meter estimate.

Calgary fare componentRate used by the calculator
Initial meter chargeCA$4.50 for the first 120 metres
Distance chargeCA$0.23 for each additional 120 metres
Slow or stopped travelTime-based meter calculation applies below the distance-rate speed threshold
Regulated rate scopeStreet hail and traditional phone dispatch

The regulated distance rate applies when the taxi travels faster than 20.24 kilometres per hour. At lower speeds, including slow traffic or waiting, time affects the meter. The Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta uses your added waiting minutes to represent this part of the trip, but it cannot reproduce every second of a live meter.

Edmonton Taxi and Accessible Taxi Rates

The City of Edmonton sets fares for taxis and accessible taxis under Vehicle for Hire Bylaw 17400. Accessible taxis use the same fare structure and cannot add a higher charge for accessible service.

Edmonton fare componentStreet hailEligible pre-arranged taxi
First 135 metresCA$4.10CA$3.50
Each additional 135 metresCA$0.25CA$0.25
Each additional 24 seconds of waitingCA$0.20CA$0.20

The lower initial amount applies when an Edmonton taxi is pre-arranged through an approved mobile app or a pre-existing written agreement. This does not mean every rideshare or private vehicle-for-hire trip follows the taxi meter table. The Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta applies the selected Edmonton taxi basis and the same published distance and waiting increments.

Calgary and Edmonton Airport Taxi Charges

Airport trips may follow extra rules that do not apply to a normal city journey.

Calgary International Airport (YYC)

YYC publishes a taxi access fee of CA$5.10 plus GST for terminal pickups and CA$4.60 plus GST for airport-campus drop-offs. The calculator detects an eligible airport pickup or drop-off from the selected route and adds the relevant fee with GST. A wrong or incomplete airport address may prevent correct detection.

Edmonton International Airport (YEG)

For a taxi trip ending at Edmonton International Airport, the passenger must be charged the lower of the Edmonton metered fare or the official airport-zone flat rate. The correct zone depends on the pickup area. The calculator shows the meter-based estimate because a typed address alone may not reliably identify the official fare-map zone.

When you use the Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta for an airport trip, compare the result with the current official airport information and ask the taxi provider which fare rule will apply.

What Can Change the Final Taxi Fare?

The final amount shown on a taxi meter can be different from an online estimate because of:

  • The road route taken
  • Traffic, roadworks and diversions
  • Stopped or slow-moving time
  • A different pickup or drop-off point
  • Calgary app-based commercial pricing
  • Applicable airport access fees
  • Edmonton airport-zone rules
  • Changes to municipal rates
  • Meter rounding or fare increments

The Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta cannot predict live traffic conditions or the taxi meter’s second-by-second movement. Use the result as a planning guide and check the displayed meter and receipt after the trip.

What the Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta Includes

The estimate includes the selected Calgary or Edmonton starting charge, route distance and user-entered waiting time. It also includes an eligible YYC taxi access fee when the calculator detects the relevant airport route.

The estimate does not include Calgary app-booked prices, rideshare fares, limousine rates or rates for municipalities outside Calgary and Edmonton. It also does not guarantee the applicable Edmonton International Airport zone fare.

Popular Alberta Taxi Trips to Check

You can use the calculator to plan local trips such as:

  • Downtown Calgary to Calgary International Airport
  • Calgary neighbourhoods to the city centre
  • Downtown Edmonton to Edmonton International Airport
  • Edmonton neighbourhoods to hospitals, universities or transit centres
  • Hotel, business and event trips within Calgary or Edmonton

Enter exact addresses whenever possible. A general place name can select a different entrance or road and change the estimated distance.

Practical Tips Before Taking a Taxi

  • Confirm whether the fare will use a regulated meter, an app price or an airport flat rate.
  • Check that the meter starts with the correct initial charge for the selected city and trip type.
  • Ask for an estimate before accepting the ride when the pricing method is unclear.
  • Keep your receipt if you need to review the route or fare later.
  • For an Edmonton airport trip, check the official zone map before travel.
  • Recalculate the estimate if your pickup point, destination or expected waiting time changes.

FAQs

Is the Taxi Fare Calculator Alberta an official government calculator?

No. It is an independent informational tool. It uses published municipal fare inputs for supported taxi trips, but it is not operated by the Government of Alberta, the City of Calgary, the City of Edmonton, an airport or a taxi company.

No. Taxi fare rules are local. This calculator supports Calgary and Edmonton, and it should not be used to estimate rates in another Alberta municipality.

It uses the waiting minutes entered by the user. It cannot see the exact slow-speed and stopped-time record that a live taxi meter will measure during the trip.

No. Rideshare and other private vehicle-for-hire prices can follow different rules. Use the price displayed by the relevant service before confirming that trip.

The estimate adds the published YYC taxi pickup or drop-off access fee with GST when an eligible airport route is correctly detected. Confirm the current fee and selected airport location before travel.

For a taxi trip ending at Edmonton International Airport, the fare must be the lower of the metered amount or the official flat rate for the pickup zone. Check the City of Edmonton airport fare map for the correct zone.

No. The City of Edmonton states that an accessible taxi must charge the same fare as a non-accessible taxi and cannot add an extra fee for accessible service.

Use the calculator above to compare a Calgary or Edmonton route before travelling. Select the correct city and fare basis, enter accurate addresses, and include expected waiting time. The estimate can help with trip planning, while the final fare remains subject to the live meter, route, airport rules and pricing method.

The tool is intended for supported metropolitan Adelaide addresses. Separate country fare rules may apply when a journey ends outside the metropolitan area.
