How a Gold Coast Metered Taxi Fare Is Built

For a standard rank or hail trip, the meter starts with the applicable flagfall and then adds distance and any stationary waiting time. Permitted tolls or other applicable charges can be added where the rules allow.

Weekday daytime

From 7am to 7pm on a weekday that is not a public holiday, the meter starts at A$3.80. Distance is then charged at A$2.77 per kilometre.

All other times

At other times the meter starts at A$6.20. The published South East Queensland distance rate remains A$2.77 per kilometre.

Metered fare = Applicable flagfall + Distance + Stationary waiting + Permitted additional charges

Simple 10 km Fare Example

These examples show only the flagfall and 10 km distance component. They do not include stationary waiting, tolls, airport-related charges, payment surcharge or other permitted extras.

Weekday daytime A$31.50

A$3.80 flagfall + 10 km × A$2.77.

All other times A$33.90

A$6.20 flagfall + 10 km × A$2.77.

Important: These amounts are not guaranteed trip prices. A real meter fare can be higher where the taxi spends time stationary or where permitted tolls, access fees or payment charges apply.

Rank & Hail vs Booked Taxi Fares

Queensland treats rank and hail taxi work differently from most pre-booked personalised transport services.

Rank or Hail Taxi

  • Queensland maximum fares apply.
  • The taximeter must be used.
  • There is no booking fee for a direct rank or street hail.
  • A passenger may negotiate a lower fare with the driver.
  • The passenger pays the lower of the metered or agreed fare.
  • High-occupancy fares must not be applied.
  • Premium vehicle fares must not be applied.

Booked Taxi

  • Most ordinary booked taxi fares are not subject to the Queensland maximum-fare schedule.
  • A fare estimate or agreed fare must be provided before the journey starts.
  • A booking service may set its own booking fee and pricing.
  • Applicable booking charges should be included in the upfront fare estimate.
  • Special maximum-fare protection continues for qualifying TSS and wheelchair-accessible trips.

Booked Taxi Fare Rules on the Gold Coast

Ordinary booked taxi fares can be commercially set by the booking provider. This means the price offered for a booked taxi can differ from the maximum rank and hail meter rates.

Upfront fare information required

Before a booked trip

  • The passenger must receive a fare estimate in Australian dollars before the journey starts, or agree to the fare upfront.
  • Booking fees may be charged by the booking service.
  • Any booking fee should be included in the fare estimate.
  • The final booked price can therefore differ from a rank and hail meter estimate.

Where maximum fares still apply

  • A booked service for a Taxi Subsidy Scheme member.
  • A booked Wheelchair Accessible Taxi carrying a passenger who is using a wheelchair.
  • These protected journeys remain subject to Queensland maximum fare requirements.

Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Fare Rules

Queensland provides specific fare protections for passengers who require a Wheelchair Accessible Taxi.

Meter start rule

When a passenger uses a wheelchair, the taximeter may only start after the passenger has been safely loaded and secured in the taxi.

Protected booked fare

For a booked Wheelchair Accessible Taxi carrying a passenger who uses a wheelchair, maximum fares apply and the maximum applicable booking fee is A$1.90.

High-occupancy and premium booking charges should not be applied to protected TSS or wheelchair-user journeys covered by the Queensland maximum-fare rules.

Large Groups & High-Occupancy Taxi Pricing

Rank or hail

A high-occupancy fare must not be applied to a rank or hail taxi trip, regardless of how many passengers are travelling.

Booked high-occupancy vehicle

A booking provider may set high-occupancy pricing for a booked service. Queensland no longer regulates that surcharge under the maximum-fare notice, so the amount should be checked in the provider's upfront fare estimate.

Gold Coast Airport Taxi Charges

Gold Coast Airport has its own ground-transport access arrangements for taxi operators. These airport operator charges are separate from Queensland's standard taxi flagfall and per-kilometre tariff.

Airport operator charge

Published taxi entry fee

Gold Coast Airport currently lists an A$4.50 charge for each entry of a registered taxi into the airport ground-transport holding area.

Passenger fare treatment

The A$4.50 amount is an airport operator access charge rather than a separate Queensland taxi tariff. Queensland rules separately control when tolls, access fees or similar charges can be passed to a passenger.

Calculator note: Do not assume that every Gold Coast Airport journey automatically adds A$4.50 to the passenger's taxi fare solely because the airport publishes this operator entry charge.

Tolls, Access Fees & Other Charges

Only charges that genuinely apply to the journey should be added to the passenger's total.

Tolls and access fees

Tolls, access fees or ferry charges incurred as part of a hiring may be charged to the passenger under the applicable Queensland rules.

Luggage

Queensland's maximum-fare application guidance states that there is no taxi fare charge for carrying luggage.

Non-cash payment

A transaction surcharge may apply when paying by credit card or another eligible non-cash method. The maximum published surcharge is 5%.

Cleaning fee

If a passenger soils the taxi, a cleaning charge of up to A$172 may be applied.

Multiple-Hire Taxi Trips

Queensland also permits multiple-hire arrangements where passengers share a taxi under the relevant fare rules.

75% multiple-hire tariff

Queensland's multiple-hiring tariff is set at 75% of the standard fare. The fare charged to each passenger must remain lower than the fare that passenger would have paid if travelling directly to their destination.

Gold Coast Taxi Fare FAQs

The current South East Queensland maximum flagfall is A$3.80 from 7am to 7pm on weekdays except public holidays. The flagfall is A$6.20 at all other times.
The current maximum South East Queensland taxi distance rate is A$2.77 per kilometre.
The current published South East Queensland fare schedule uses a higher A$6.20 starting flagfall at times outside the weekday daytime period, but the published distance rate remains A$2.77 per kilometre.
There is no booking fee when you directly hail a taxi or take one from a taxi rank. For ordinary booked services, the booking provider may set a booking fee and should include it in the upfront estimate. For qualifying TSS or wheelchair trips covered by maximum fares, the booking fee is capped at A$1.90.
Most ordinary booked taxi services are not subject to the Queensland maximum-fare schedule. The passenger must receive a fare estimate or agree to the fare before the trip begins. Maximum fares continue to apply to qualifying TSS journeys and wheelchair-user Wheelchair Accessible Taxi trips.
A high-occupancy fare must not be applied to a rank or hail taxi trip regardless of passenger numbers. High-occupancy pricing may be set by a booking provider for booked services, subject to the applicable booked-fare requirements.
Gold Coast Airport currently publishes an A$4.50 fee for each entry of a registered taxi into its ground-transport holding area. It is an airport operator charge rather than a separate Queensland taxi tariff, so it should not simply be treated as an automatic universal passenger surcharge.
The final amount can vary because of actual road distance, stationary waiting time, traffic conditions, route choice, tolls, eligible access charges, booking arrangements and non-cash payment surcharges.
