How Sydney Taxi Fare Estimates Are Calculated

Taxi fares for Sydney rank and hail trips are regulated under the NSW point to point transport fare rules. Each journey begins with a hiring charge, also called a flag fall. After the trip starts, the fare increases based on distance travelled while the taxi is moving at normal road speeds.

When the taxi slows down because of traffic congestion, traffic lights or temporary stops, waiting time can apply. This helps the fare calculation consider both distance travelled and time spent during the journey.

  • The meter starts with the hiring charge when the journey begins.
  • Distance pricing applies while the taxi is travelling at 26 km/h or more.
  • Waiting time applies when the vehicle is travelling below 26 km/h.
  • A Passenger Service Levy of $1.32 may be added where the service provider passes it on.
  • Non-cash payments such as card, Cabcharge or EFTPOS can attract a surcharge of up to 5%.
  • Toll charges may be added if toll roads are used during the trip.

How much is a taxi fare Calculator in Sydney?

A Sydney taxi fare calculator depends on the distance travelled, journey duration, pickup and destination, travel time, traffic delays, toll roads and any permitted additional charges. Enter your exact addresses in the taxi fare calculator to receive a route-specific estimate instead of relying on a general citywide price.

How can I calculate a taxi fare in Sydney?

Enter your Sydney pickup address, destination and expected travel date and time. The calculator determines the road distance and estimated duration before applying the relevant fare inputs.

The resulting taxi fare estimate may include:

  • Hire charge
  • Distance charge
  • Day or night taxi rate
  • Estimated slow-traffic or waiting charge
  • Passenger Service Levy
  • Selected tolls or additional charges

The result is an estimate and not a guaranteed final meter fare.

How is a Sydney taxi fare calculated?

A Sydney rank and hail taxi fare is generally calculated using the initial hire charge, distance travelled, applicable day or night distance rate and waiting time.

The current published urban maximums include:

  • Hire charge: $5.17
  • Peak-time hire charge: $2.65 in applicable periods
  • Day distance rate: $2.61 per kilometre for the first 12 km, then $2.37 per kilometre
  • Night distance rate: $3.10 per kilometre for the first 12 km, then $2.82 per kilometre
  • Waiting time: $67.78 per hour while travelling below 26 km/h

Is a taxi fare estimate the same as a taxi fare quote?

No. A taxi fare estimate is an approximate calculation based on distance, time and fare inputs. A taxi fare quote is a price offered by a taxi booking provider before the trip.

Does the taxi fare calculator include the Passenger Service Levy?

The calculator may include the Passenger Service Levy automatically. The NSW levy is $1.20, and when passed on to the passenger with GST, it can increase the trip cost by $1.32.
