How Sydney Taxi Fare Is Calculated

Simple visual breakdown of how an estimated urban rank & hail taxi fare is built.

1

Hire charge

The fare begins with the base hire charge when the trip starts.

2

Distance charge

Per kilometre amount is added during the trip. Night trips use higher distance rates.

3

Waiting time

When the taxi slows below the trigger speed, waiting time can be added.

4

Extras

Tolls, levy, approved surcharge or cleaning fee may be added where applicable.

Estimated fare = Hire charge + Distance + Waiting time + Applicable extras

Rank & Hail vs Booked Fare Rules

This is one of the most important distinctions for Sydney taxi pages.

Rank & Hail Taxi

  • Maximum fares are government regulated
  • Fare meter / fare calculation device must run during trip
  • Street hails and taxi rank pickups fall into this category
  • You cannot be charged above the regulated maximum
  • Multiple hire rules and maxi surcharge rules may apply

Booked Taxi / Hire Vehicle

  • Booked fares are generally not government regulated
  • Provider must give an upfront fare estimate before journey begins
  • Fare may be based on time, distance, fixed amount or mixed pricing
  • Any allowed variation method should be disclosed
  • TTSS booked trips remain regulated

Booked Fares in Sydney

For booked taxi, hire car and similar booking services in NSW, fares are not government regulated. Providers can set their own pricing and may use discounts, peak pricing or fixed fares.

Upfront estimate required

What booking providers must do

  • Provide an upfront fare estimate before the journey begins
  • Explain how the fare is estimated
  • Tell customer if price can vary and how that variation is calculated
  • Get customer agreement before trip starts

Estimate can be based on

  • Distance of the trip
  • Expected trip time
  • A fixed total amount
  • A mix of time and distance pricing

Passenger Service Levy

A temporary Passenger Service Levy applies to point-to-point transport trips in NSW. If the provider passes it on, the passenger sees the levy plus GST added to the fare.

Levy amount

Passenger Service Levy: $1.20
If passed to passenger with GST: $1.32

TTSS exception note

TTSS customers remain under regulated fare rules for booked trips, and a fare calculation device must be used for all TTSS journeys.

Maxi taxi fixed fare

$80 Applies where there are 5 or more passengers, or the maxi-cab is requested by the hirer at Sydney Airport taxi ranks, other than for wheelchair-accessible service carriage.

No other charges may be added to the airport fixed fare except an allowed non-cash payment surcharge or a cleaning fee applied under the fare order.

Toll Roads in Sydney

When the taxi uses a toll road, toll charges may be added to the fare.

General toll rule

If your taxi ride travels on a toll road, the toll charges are added to your fare.

Sydney Harbour Bridge / Tunnel rule

If you travel on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Sydney Harbour Tunnel, you should only be charged the toll during your trip, not for the driver’s return journey.

Maxi Taxi & Multiple Hire

Useful extra rules to show on a Sydney rates page.

Maxi taxi surcharge rule

When hiring a maxi taxi at a rank or hailing it from the street with five or more passengers, the fare may be up to 150% of the regular taxi fare.

Multiple hire rule

If passengers agree to share a taxi with a stranger, each passenger pays 75% of the maximum fare to their own destination.

TTSS & Pre-Paid Fare Rules

TTSS and pre-paid taxi rules should be shown separately because users often confuse them with standard booked fares.

Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme (TTSS)

  • TTSS covers half of a taxi fare up to $60 subsidy per trip
  • You pay the remaining fare
  • Booked TTSS fares remain regulated
  • Only one Smartcard or Travel Docket can be used per journey

Pre-paid taxi rule

  • If asked, you may need to pay an estimated fare before the trip begins
  • If the final fare is higher, the difference is paid at trip end
  • If lower, only the remaining fare deposit is refundable
  • If using a TTSS voucher for all or part of the fare, you do not have to pre-pay

Card Surcharge & Refund Notes

Useful customer-facing notes for the pre-paid section.

Card surcharge

If you pay the estimated fare by Cabcharge, credit card or EFTPOS, a maximum 5% surcharge applies.

If the final fare amount is lower than what you pre-paid, you can only be refunded for the remaining fare deposit. No portion of the surcharge amount can be refunded.
