How Canberra Taxi Fare Estimates Are Calculated

Taxi fares in Canberra are regulated under the ACT Government’s maximum taxi fare determination. This calculator uses the current Canberra / ACT maximum fare structure for taxi fare estimates, including standard single hire fares, multiple hire fares, high occupancy taxi fares, waiting time and approved extra charges.

Each journey begins with a flagfall charge. After the trip starts, the fare increases based on the distance travelled, and waiting time may apply when the taxi is stationary or moving slowly. Different fare levels apply depending on whether the journey starts during the daytime weekday period or during the night, weekend or public holiday period. Canberra also has separate fare categories for standard single hire, standard multiple hire, 5 to 7 passenger high occupancy taxis, and 8 or more passenger high occupancy taxis.

  • The meter starts with the flagfall when the journey begins.
  • This calculator uses Canberra’s current ACT maximum taxi fare structure.
  • Day and Night / Weekend / Public Holiday fares apply depending on the trip start time.
  • Standard single hire, multiple hire and high occupancy taxi rates are different fare categories.
  • Waiting time may be added when the taxi is stopped or moving slowly during the journey.
  • A premium booking fee may apply only when a premium service is specifically requested through a transport booking service.
  • A baby capsule fee may apply where a baby capsule is provided.
  • A wheelchair-accessible taxi lift fee exists under ACT rules, but it is payable by the ACT Government and must not be charged to the passenger.
Canberra Airport Taxi Charges An airport toll may apply to journeys that start from the designated Canberra Airport taxi rank where the driver has paid the toll. A commissionaire surcharge may also apply for hirings undertaken from Canberra Airport when a taxi commissionaire service is provided. For multiple hire trips, the airport toll is shared equally by each hirer. Source: ACT Government – Maximum Fares for Taxi Services Determination 2025 (No 2)
