Estimate a Ballarat taxi meter fare using road distance, selected travel time and the current Victorian Large Regional maximum fare inputs. This informational calculator is mainly for unbooked rank or hail trips and does not create or confirm a taxi booking.
High-occupancy rates can apply to five or more passengers or when a larger-than-standard vehicle is specifically required, except for wheelchair or mobility-aid trips. Booked fares are not regulated. Add levy recovery, electronic-payment or pass-through charges only when they genuinely apply.
Use this taxi fare calculator to estimate the possible cost of an unbooked taxi journey in Ballarat. Enter your pickup location and destination, choose the expected travel date and time, and select the fare structure displayed by the taxi.
The result is an informational estimate based on road distance, estimated journey time and Victoria’s maximum Large Regional taxi rates. It does not book a taxi or guarantee the final meter fare
Enter and select a complete pickup address and destination in the calculator above. Using an exact street address or named entrance usually gives a more useful route than entering only a suburb.
Before calculating:
The calculator will display an estimated route distance, journey duration and fare breakdown. Treat the result as a planning range rather than a confirmed taxi quote.

Ballarat is part of Victoria’s Large Regional fare area. The following maximum rates apply to qualifying unbooked taxi trips that begin in Ballarat from 1 July 2026.
An unbooked service is a taxi hailed from the street or hired at a taxi rank. Booked services can use different prices because fares for booked trips are not regulated in the same way.
| Fare structure | Vehicle rate | Flagfall | Distance charge | Time charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Time or distance | Standard | A$4.60 | A$2.35/km above 21 km/h | A$0.80/min below 21 km/h |
| Time or distance | High occupancy | A$4.60 | A$3.60/km above 21 km/h | A$1.25/min below 21 km/h |
| Time and distance | Standard | A$4.60 | A$1.90/km throughout the trip | A$0.60/min throughout the trip |
| Time and distance | High occupancy | A$4.60 | A$3.20/km throughout the trip | A$0.65/min throughout the trip |
These are maximum regulated amounts. A provider may charge less. The fare information displayed inside the taxi should identify the structure used by its meter.

Victoria permits two meter structures for eligible unbooked trips in Ballarat.
Under the time or distance structure, the meter applies the distance rate while the taxi travels above 21 km/h. When its speed falls below 21 km/h, the time rate applies instead. Traffic lights, congestion and passenger requested waiting can therefore affect the taxi fare.
Under the time and distance structure, distance and journey time are both charged throughout the trip. For a standard journey, the calculation uses:
Estimated fare = A$4.60 flagfall + A$1.90 per kilometre + A$0.60 per minute + applicable extras
This cab meter calculator uses route information and the options selected by the user. It cannot reproduce every movement recorded by a physical taxi meter, so its result may differ from the amount charged after the journey.
These examples show how the published rates work. They are illustrations, not prices for specific Ballarat routes.
For an estimated 8 km standard journey lasting 15 minutes:
This amount excludes late night or holiday fees, levy recovery, electronic payment surcharges, tolls and other permitted charges.
If all 8 km were travelled above 21 km/h with no charged low speed time:
A real journey may include both faster travel and low speed periods. The final meter calculation will depend on the taxi’s actual movement.
A Ballarat taxi fare estimate may change when an authorised extra applies.
A maximum A$4.40 fee may apply to an eligible trip beginning:
A maximum A$5.40 fee may apply all day on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, as well as from 6 pm on New Year’s Eve. It can also apply from 7 pm before another Victorian public holiday until 6 am on the holiday.
The late night and holiday fees do not apply together.
Higher rates can apply when five or more passengers travel or when a larger than standard vehicle is specifically requested. A higher rate should not be applied only because a larger vehicle is required for a passenger using a wheelchair or mobility aid.
The final amount may also include:
Only include an extra in the calculator when it is likely to apply.
The calculator can help plan trips involving Ballarat Railway Station, Ballarat Central, Lake Wendouree, Sovereign Hill, Ballarat Base Hospital and Federation University’s Mount Helen campus.
It can also estimate journeys involving areas such as Wendouree, Alfredton, Lucas, Delacombe, Sebastopol and Mount Clear. Enter the exact station entrance, hospital pickup point, campus building or street address where possible.

The result can differ from the final meter amount because of:
Booked taxi fares may use an agreed or commercially determined price instead of the regulated unbooked rates shown here.
The cost depends on the meter structure, distance, journey time and permitted extras. A standard unbooked fare starts with a maximum A$4.60 flagfall under the current Large Regional schedule.
The standard time or distance structure charges up to A$2.35 per kilometre above 21 km/h. The time-and-distance structure charges up to A$1.90 per kilometre plus A$0.60 per minute.
